Welcome to GPGrid.com.
Way back as the new century was dawning I was complaining about the websites covering Formula One, long time fan, and someone said that I should stop complaining and start my own website. Little did I realise the journey I would start.
Life started with F1podium where I put my ideas into practice, until that is, when I was contacted by FOM lawyers with a ‘cease and decist’ order [threat] which I could not resolve. In a very depressed mood I was reading a news story on pitpass about a proposed new single seater series called A1 Grand Prix and was suddenly very excited again.
In 2004 I started a new website, one page to be precise, called A1podium and soon realised that I was the very first independent specialist website covering the series. Needless to say I finished with F1podium.
Over the coming weeks, months, years the website expanded with more and more features. I was first to connect two seperate pieces of information at the start of season three, of now called A1GP, and announce to the world that it looked a very strong possibility that the series would be partnering with Ferrari for season four. Also during chatroom conversations I pointed out that in my opinion if this did happen it would be a mistake for A1GP.
By the end of season three the deal had been done and so had I — having covered every pre-season test session and BritishGP since the start I found out that no longer would I be receiving trackside press pass because all the main stream media now wanted to cover A1GP powered by Ferrari and I had to move aside to make room for them. When questioned why the oldest A1GP website couldn’t remain accredited they told me it was because I was only a ‘fan site’ and they needed to bring new people to races. Later during season four they started acting like FOM had all those years earlier – then at the final round at Brands Hatch, UK, I attended as a paying fan for the very last race ever for A1GP. A very sad day for the fans.
I had already prepared the ground for the new rules — must cover more than just A1GP — by starting GPGrid in the vain hope of getting my press accreditation back.
Following the finish of season four everything imploded on A1GP but I continued reporting on all the twist and turns over the coming months not realising at the time it would turn into years.
I never lost faith, hope, that the A1 concept of Nation vs Nation would return although it has turned out that A1GP is too far down to be brought back there is a new version coming called A10 World Series.
This website is designed for my harshest critic – Me – it must be unique so as soon as you see it you know where you are, it must be fully up to date with latest news, it must have other features of interest, it must be easy to use, it must be easy to read, it must have interactivity, it must be free to use, it must be clear of advertising and therefore it must fit within my meager budget.
If I have met all these aims you will judge it worthy of your time, or not. Much feedback from users has gone into the design – I do listen.
I aim to continue, and improve, with A10 World Series and You over the coming years.
Please join us in following the best concept of single seater racing.
